Flower Hospital Flower Hospital’s Lake Park facility in Sylvania, Ohio, was faced with a difficult dilemma: what to do with its old, single-pane aluminum windows. They were drafty, frosted up in winter, and needed new caulking. Replacing them was an option, but one that seemed daunting, both physically and financially. And the staff was adamant about not inconveniencing their residents with a lengthy construction project. So they installed interior insulating windows, which fit right over existing windows. The interior insulating windows were custom designed, supplied, and installed by Maine Glass. “They were a fraction of the cost of replacement windows,” said Disbrow. “We received the full benefit without the full expense. And the windows were installed very quickly during our residents’ regular activities. They weren’t disrupted at all.” The air space created between the original and the new Maine Glass pane provides insulation from both heat and cold. In addition, the frames of both windows provide a double barrier against air infiltration, which is reduced by as much as 90 percent; heat loss from conduction is reduced by 40 to 50 percent. The rigid polyvinyl chloride frame provides high thermal insulation, and the options Low-E glass and between-the-glass blind add 70 percent reduction in solar heat gain. The facility saved approximately 20 percent in its first summer with the windows--$6,200 in July alone. The windows also reduce external noise infiltration by more than 50 percent. |
